*There are 2 math tests left! One on metric measurement and one on customary measurement. The post test for metric will be next Tuesday, May13th. The post test on customary measurement will be on Tuesday, May 27th. That will leave us with a few days to discuss line plots, the final math topic that needs to be covered in our curriculum.
The math EOG packet, that is due tomorrow, is review. It goes over "Numbers and Operations in Base 10". This strand makes up 25% of the EOG. The other large strand is "Numbers and Operations-Fractions" and it will cover 29.6% of the EOG test. They will be given a review packet on these concepts to work through next week. They will also receive review packets on "Measurement and Data", "Geometry" and "Operations and Algebraic Thinking". All of these packets will be sent home in your child's Monday folder and are good review for the EOGs. Some nights you will see that I have assigned it as homework. Students will be working in small groups to go over the problems and will be encouraged to ask me questions if there is something they don't understand. Hope this helps.

Students need to know how to use comparison bars and break apart drawings to help solve problems. *There are 2 math tests left! One on metric measurement and one on customary measurement. The post test for metric will be next Tuesday, May13th. The post test on customary measurement will be on Tuesday, May 27th. That will leave us with a few days to discuss line plots, the final math topic that needs to be covered in our curriculum.
The math EOG packet, that is due tomorrow, is review. It goes over "Numbers and Operations in Base 10". This strand makes up 25% of the EOG. The other large strand is "Numbers and Operations-Fractions" and it will cover 29.6% of the EOG test. They will be given a review packet on these concepts to work through next week. They will also receive review packets on "Measurement and Data", "Geometry" and "Operations and Algebraic Thinking". All of these packets will be sent home in your child's Monday folder and are good review for the EOGs. Some nights you will see that I have assigned it as homework. Students will be working in small groups to go over the problems and will be encouraged to ask me questions if there is something they don't understand. Hope this helps.

Homework: Make a decimal riddle. Use the "Journal Prompt" as your rough draft. Have an adult check your riddle for accuracy AND your spelling. Write your final riddle on the piece of construction paper you brought home from class. Clues are written on the outside in large, bold letters. The decimal is written largely and clearly on the inside.

1) Define geology and geologist.
2) What is the difference between a rock and a mineral?
3) Brainstorm different properties used to describe rocks and minerals.
4) Think of our scratch test, which tools are helpful in determining hardness?
5) What are you measuring if you measure the circumference of a rock?
6) What are you measuring if you measure the diameter of a rock?
7) Calcite is a mineral of limestone. Limestone is a common building material. Why could this be a problem? Think about our vinegar/acid test.
8) Define luster.
9) How does a hand lens serve as a tool for the hardness test?

Math post-test: Unit 3, Lessons 2-5, 11, 13, 15-17, 19-20 were all taught and will be assessed. Students need to be able to explain subtraction and ungrouping/regrouping. Students need to be able to solve multi-step word problems and subtract large numbers through the hundred thousands. Students need to know how to use comparison bars and break apart drawings to help solve problems. Students need to know how to set up a "situation equation" and a "solution equation" using variables (letters) to represent the unknown.
